WOW - what an experience that was! I think half the island came out for it. Hundreds of stalls go up and for three hours, they sell, sell, sell. You could buy almost anything there - shoes, socks, underwear, clothing, fruit, CD's, plastic ware, cell phones, gadgets, kitchen utensils. You name it they've got it.
On one shoe table, I found a bunch of fake Birkenstock sandals. They looked exactly like Birkenstock with the tag and everything BUT the size I have been wearing for the past six years didn't fit me here. Then I knew they were fake. That and the fact they only cost $6 CDN. The Chinese lady who was selling them kept saying to me that they fit and they looked good - she wanted the sale. Chinese women are notorious for not having shoes that fit anyway so she couldn't quite understand what my problem was when I said they were too small. I think she was a bit disgusted at me.
And there were lots of tables of pirated DVD's and CD's. Malaysia is the world capital for pirated versions of movies and music. The day a movie comes out in the theaters is the day you can buy the pirated version here for only $1 CDN. The piracy really hurts the economy though as reputable companies and lots of movie making companies don't want to come in to Malaysia to do business. Too bad people can't understand that and stop buying the cheap versions.
It was so crowded and smelly at the market. I was afraid that if I left Tim's side, we would get separated and never find each other again!! It was good to finally leave the throng of people and walk home with our small purchase - 10 plums :)
