Naomi and Zach shared their durian with me this evening. Durian is an odd fruit. It is quite large and covered in spikes on the outside. Actually ripe durian falling from the trees is very dangerous. The outside smells so bad that most hotels and malls here have signs forbidding anyone to carry durian inside. The outdoor markets stink because of the durian tables.
When cut open, it contains several pear shaped clusters of the yellow, mushy fruit meat. Naomi and Zach love the stuff but we have met few others here who can stomach it. I'm definitely in the latter group - one bite did me in. The smell is hard to take and the aftertaste is somewhat like a bad onion. Naomi and Zach say that after eating it for awhile, the aftertaste subsides and you get the real fruit taste. I wasn't up for that much durian eating so I quickly washed my hands and drank a lot of water!!

You are very brave to try to eat something that smells bad - it sounds like an aquired taste.
