Today Kaleb and Annie received their school schedules. Kaleb has World Religions, English, Information Processing, Geometry, Biology, French II and Concert Band. The high school has a tumble rotation, which I had never heard of before. Everyday, Monday through Friday, is a different schedule for him so he needs to keep on his toes to know what day it is and what class he has. The final class everyday is called Protected Period - this is a 35 minute class of the teacher's choosing and with no tests or grades. P Periods are meant to be fun and to involve the students in other interests. He signed up for Chinese Chess, Movies and Animation, Fantasy Football (create your own NFL team and have play-offs with other students) and Hacker High School (internal workings of computers).
Annie has a fairly regular schedule every day. It starts with Bible, Language Arts, Science and Intermediate Band before lunch. After lunch she has Study Skills or Phys Ed, Social Studies and to end the day, Math. She also has P Periods - Study Hall, Intramurals, Explorations and All-School Activities.
Another new thing for us here is Power School. This is an online program used by teachers to track daily attendance, assignments handed in, general comments, schedules, etc. Parents can access PS anytime to see their student's progress and grades. As dorm parents, we use this as motivational tool - if a student has any NHI's (not handed in) listed for the week, we can remove a weekend privilege such as a trip to the mall or the movies. Likewise, if a teacher places a positive comment about a student's attitude or good effort, we can reward with more privileges. I love the concept and the teachers here say they appreciate being "paperless" by putting everything online.
Some of our dorm students need to change their schedules, especially high school students who are trying to fulfill prerequisites for college. Our senior boys are taking a few Advanced Placements courses and already has papers due by Friday. Everyone was great about study hall tonight - in fact, a few of them began an hour early at 6:30 pm and worked until we began making ice cream sundaes for our dorm treat at 8:30 pm.
They are a tremendously great group of kids - very loyal to one another and very easy to get along with. I'm getting used to things like "Aunt Shauna, may I go to the library? " or "Aunt Shauna, may I be excused from the table?" So far, the answer always is "Yes you may!"

Shauna, I've just gotten caught up on your blog as I've been in Ontario for 2 weeks (w/out internet access). I'm glad to hear that you all arrived safely and have been enjoying your wonderful experience so far.
Hello, love & hugs to all of you...I am finally sitting down for a few minutes to catch up on everything. I arrived home from the lake on Monday, August 7/06. Had a wonderful vacation....with the Bears..bears...bears...yes we had a lot of bears at Whitebear this summer...very unusual but the environment is changing...soooo I did a lot of walking with Luke, Levi & Piper just to be on the safe side. Jane's wedding is on Friday so I am busy making everyone's outfits fit etc. including one bridesmaid dress. Taryn just arrived home from Taiwan..so this is the first opportunity she has had to even try her dress on!!! All will be well..I am so glad to hear that everything on the other side of the world is tickety boo ..Auntie Shauna it sounds like you have endeared yourself to your charges, good for Kaleb..enterprising young man...making money all ready. How are your classes Annie & Kaleb?? Tim what are you busy with? Just a quick funny story from the lake..our friend Sandra came from Washington for Jane's wedding. So on Sat am she decided to hang her dress from Needless Markup (Neiman Marcus) on the telephone line to air out. It was a tad breezy and all of a sudden her dress was hanging 30 for 40 ft above the hill flying straight out!!! Just flew out there on the hanger. With everyone watching...mouths open...no one said anything but everyone wondered how we would get it down. Alas wonders never cease...it just blew off the hangar and landed on the hill at Whitebear unharmed. We laughed and laughed..probably never happened before at Whitebear that a fancy dress was flying horizontally over the 7th st hill.
May God continue to hold all of you in the palm of his hand. Love Mum
